Sports betting to enter Maryland, Louisiana, and South Dakota

Voters in Maryland, South Dakota and Louisiana back sports betting on yesterday’s election poll for regulation

‘The people of Louisiana have spoken’, Louisiana Wins’ Ryan Berni announced, saying how the state was missing out on tax revenue, and that now this additional income will support the needs of the state, after 55 of the state’s 64 parishes in Louisiana voted in support of introducing sports betting to the state.

The remaining obstacle now is legislature, as the state will have to develop a framework for sports betting. Senator Craig Zucker drafted a bill proposing a $2.5m license fee, plus an annual $250,000 renewal charge, and 20% gross revenue tax.

Meanwhile in South Dakota the Amendment to legalise sports betting in the city of Deadwood was approved by 58.5% to 41.5% margin, which will enable the expansion of the range of legal gambling products in the state to include blackjack, craps, poker, roulette and slot machines. There’s no particular framework in place yet, although the Amendment did mention that the money raised should be used for restoration and preservation of the city.

In Maryland on the other hand, 66.2% of voters were in favour of wagering which means sports and events betting should also be legalized at particular licensed facilities, with the generated revenue primarily directed towards funding public education.
